Big Sky Star Quilt Pattern

$14.00

Designed by Montana’s own Lindlee Smith, the intermediate Big Sky Star Quilt Pattern certainly lives up to it’s name! A variation on the classic Lone Star Quilt, Big Sky Star is made up of 6 split and layered 8 point stars. The finished quilt is 85″ x 85″ and the pattern includes the fabric requirements for 4 different color options – 12 colors, 2 colors, 7 colors, or scrappy!

Use quilting cotton from Jennifer Sampou’s gorgeous Ombre Sky collection to make your own Big Sky Quilt!

Lindlee grew up on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, north of Wolf Point, and was exposed to Star Quilts from a young age. Though not a member of the tribe herself, Lindlee worked with Rose Atkinson – a long-time instructor of Star Quilt Techniques at Fort Peck Community College – when designing this pattern. Five dollars from every one of Lindlee’s Patchwork Lone Star quilt patterns sold goes towards providing materials for students of this course who are unable to purchase their own.

Lindlee’s hope and intention with her patterns is to bring awareness to the history of the Star Quilt on the Fort Peck Reservation while doing something to help support and continue the tradition.

For the Sioux and Assiniboine Tribes, the star quilt remains one of the most honorable items a family can give or receive. Giveaways of star quilts are held at pow-wows, basketball tournaments, memorials, and other events.

Those interested in making a Star Quilt should take intentional steps to understand and appreciate the history and culture of these amazing quilts. You can learn more from Lindlee’s blog posts – Part 1 and Part 2 – and Kim Elise Taylor’s academic paper on the subject.
