Where can I buy paper sewing patterns?
Remember the feeling of leafing through giant glossy pattern books at fabric stores? The endless possibilities were both intoxicating and overwhelming. Here at Confident Stitch, we created that same feeling with our drawers and drawers of patterns. At the beginning of this year, however, we made the difficult decision to phase out patterns so we can focus on what makes us unique: high-quality quilting and garment fabrics. Since making this change, we have received many customer questions, especially about where to buy paper sewing patterns if not at Joann Fabrics or Confident Stitch.
Although we have phased out a large portion of our paper-pattern inventory, we have created a Resource Page that links you to our tried-and-true clothing and quilt pattern designers. All of the companies on the resource page offer both paper and PDF patterns, and you can order directly from them.

Why did Confident Stitch decide to phase out patterns?
One of the magic things about making your own clothes and quilts is that you get to make the exact item you want out of the exact fabric you want. Being a small store with limited space, the best way to give you access to the full range of patterns from our favorite designers was to create the Resource Page. You can click each pattern company to go straight to their website and order directly from them!
What’s more is that phasing out most of our pattern inventory will allow us to carry even more unique, high quality quilting cottons and garment fabrics. We do still plan to carry a small selection of some of our favorite bag, apron and pajama patterns, but for everything else we highly recommend visiting the Resource Page.

How does Confident Stitch know the patterns are good?
Over the past 10 years, we have thoroughly tested all listed pattern designers. Not only are their patterns well-drafted, but they also include clear, thorough instructions. Many of them also have companion videos and blog posts about their patterns. We stand behind every company on the Resource Page.
How can Confident Stitch continue to help you choose the perfect pattern?
Come into the shop if you’re local, and we’ll steer you to the right pattern company. If you’re not local, send us an email with a description of the project you are dreaming of, and we’ll send you links to patterns we think might work for you.

What if you hate taping together PDF patterns?
Nearly all of the pattern companies on the Resource Page carry both paper and PDF patterns, but if you need to buy a PDF pattern, you have options. Here in Missoula, Missoula Copy Center will print PDF patterns on giant sheets of paper so you don’t have to tape letter-sized sheets together. The file to send to the copy shop will have a title similar to: “U.S. Copy Shop Pattern File – 1 page, 36″ X 115″, 653 KB.” Don’t send the “Tiled Pattern File”, which is for printing at home. Generally, the big-name copy shops charge more than local independent shops for large-format printing.
Head over to the Resource Page and explore the websites of our favorite pattern companies! Although we have phased out a large portion of our paper-pattern inventory, the Resource Page will help you find the perfect pattern for your next project.

Kate, Thanks so much for this nice article. Your team is so supportive of the type of patterns we create and we are grateful to be listed on your website resource list. Keep making beautiful fabric and lovely garment making ideas walk hand in hand with your quilting and crafting projects. Hope you have seen our book Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets. It would be perfect for your community. Rae at Fit for Art Patterns.
Hi Rae,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! We adore your patterns! A fabric rep did show us your book and we loved it! We have put a general pause on buying books for the time being but it’s on our short list of ones to stock if/when we bring them into the shop again!
Thank you for reading and commenting ❤
